Body
Summary:
Each May is designated Historic Preservation Month by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and as Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month by the State of Colorado. The City of Colorado Springs features many historic treasures that will be celebrated during the month.
Previous Council Action:
The City Council previously proclaimed May 2020 to be Historic Preservation Month.
Background:
The City's Planning & Community Development Department and Historic Preservation Board are proud to present Historic Preservation Month to City Council, and thank the City Council for their support of Historic Preservation. Historic Preservation Month is an opportunity to create awareness of the rich history of the City and to recognize the ongoing community efforts to preserve its history. Throughout May, the agents of historic preservation and neighborhood organizations, such as the Historic Preservation Alliance and Historic Neighborhoods Partnership, will work together to highlight the cultural and historic resources within the City limits.
This year, the City and community partners are looking forward to initiating work of action tasks from the City's Historic Preservation Plan (HistoricCOS) - adopted in 2019. HistoricCOS is a city-wide preservation planning document that examines historic preservation and cultural heritage so we may better educate and inform our community on the importance of historic preservation, and be proud of our legacy story. HistoricCOS highlights the importance of historic preservation, therefore, it is important that each May is designated as Historic Preservation Month.
