Summary:
In an effort to highlight, the breadth and depth of the Colorado Springs parks system, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is asking City Council to recognize July as National Park and Recreation Month. Every day, in communities across the country, the people of parks and recreation are providing essential services and making their communities better places to live, work and play. The essential need for parks as areas of respite became more apparent this year when 83 percent of U.S. adults agreed that visiting their local parks, trails and open spaces was essential for their mental and physical well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our parks, recreational opportunities and cultural amenities are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life within our community as well as contributing to the economic and environmental well-being of this City.
This July, we have the chance to emphasize the field of parks and recreation as an essential, vital necessity by sharing how park and recreation professionals are frontline staff, confronting our most pressing health, environmental and social challenges. This year's theme is "We Are Parks and Recreation," which highlights the diversity of park and recreation professionals and showcases their selfless work. As it's Park and Recreation Month, there's no better way to celebrate than by lifting up the people who make it happen all year long.
