Summary:
Information and awareness regarding the cruel puppy mill industry and lack of protections for adult dogs who spend their entire lives in commercial breeding facilities. Cities and towns across the United States are passing laws that prevent puppy mill-bred puppies from being sold at community pet stores.
Background:
Close to 300 U.S. municipalities have passed retail pet sales ban legislation. When individuals purchase puppies from pet stores, they are often unknowingly supporting puppy mills. Puppy mills are large-scale inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities that produce puppies in large volume. They are designed to maximize profits and commonly disregard the physical, social and emotional well-being of the breeding dogs and their puppies. Even though a commercial breeder might register with the USDA and follow federal protocol, these facilities are often un-checked and face little to no penalty for inhumane standards.
