  Background:

On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor naval base, the home of the U.S. Pacific Fleet located near Honolulu, Hawaii, was unexpectedly attacked by the Empire of Japan. Hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended upon the harbor just before 8 am that Sunday morning. In total, more than 2,400 Americans, including civilians, died in the attack and another 1,000 were wounded.

The Japanese intended to disable the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Ultimately they destroyed or crippled 300 planes and 20 battleships, including the sinking of the USS Arizona where 1,000 men were trapped. The attack on Pearl Harbor proved significant in the outcome of World War II, as it prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to ask Congress to declare war on Japan, which was shortly followed by a declaration of war on Germany and Italy. The entry of the United States into the conflict of World War II changed the course of history and led to the total defeat of the Japanese military in the Pacific.
