  Background:

The redevelopment of Southwest Downtown continues General Palmer’s original vision for our community. Since Palmer’s time, the community has built on the vision with the Downtown Action Plan, SCIP funding for America the Beautiful Park, the 2001 Southwest Downtown Urban Renewal Plan, the Imagine Downtown Colorado Springs Master Plan, the 2009 Form Based Zone, the 2012 Urban Land Institute Panel, City for Champions, including the United States Olympic Museum, and the 2016 Experience Downtown Master Plan.

In addition to the various community-based plans and initiatives, the vision for Southwest Downtown redevelopment is consistent with the City’s strategic plan.

In the furtherance of Southwest Downtown redevelopment, City Council will be presented with certain action items in support of this vision for our community. Anticipated action items include:

                     Special District formation
                     Metro District
                     Business Improvement District
                     Urban Renewal Plan
                     Potential Parking Improvements
Potential Right of Way Vacations Relating to Streetscape Improvements

In addition to specific action items, City Council will receive periodic updates on significant projects, including the pedestrian bridge to America the Beautiful Park and the Streetscape Improvement Plan for Vermijo and Sierra Madre.
