Council President Pro Tem Jill Gaebler

  Summary:

The proposed ordinance creates the Colorado Springs Commission on Aging.

  Previous Council Action:

  Background:

In 2015, Colorado Springs committed to pursuing an Age-Friendly City designation through AARP and the World Health Organization.  Age-friendly communities increase awareness and advocacy around senior-related issues, and develop and implement local initiatives so that residents of all ages can maintain active, healthy, and productive lifestyles.

In March 2016, Colorado Springs was designated an Age-Friendly City, and in September 2016, the City of Colorado Springs and Innovations in Aging Collaborative released the Age-Friendly Colorado Springs Action Plan.  The plan identified as a top priority establishing a City Commission on Aging to “encourage collaboration and strategic planning between organizations and individuals with common goals, leading to powerful initiatives and policy change.”  The City of Denver has supported a commission on aging for many years, and local organizers drew from the Denver model.

The purpose of the Colorado Springs Commission on Aging is to provide ongoing and embedded advocacy for older adults in the municipal government of Colorado Springs.  Commission members are appointed by City Council, and the Office of City Council will provide staff support. The Mayor will appoint a liaison.

This item supports the City’s strategic goal relating to building community and collaborative relationships.  The Commission connects community through ongoing dialogue with citizens and local leaders to reach mutual goals, and encourages initiatives that improve the well-being of everyone.

  Financial Implications:

The Commission will require staff support.  Otherwise, there are no financial implications.

  Board/Commission Recommendation:

N/A

  Stakeholder Process:

The Age-Friendly Colorado Springs Action Plan was the outcome of several months of community assessment and conversations led by community leaders.

  Alternatives:

City Council could amend the ordinance to alter the terms of creation of the commission, or it could decline to support the ordinance.

Recommended Action

  Proposed Motion:

Adopt the ordinance as presented.
