Summary:
The City of Colorado Springs is reinstating a sustainability program by standing up The Office of Sustainability. The Office of Sustainability is controlled and managed by the Colorado Springs Sustainability Committee, which is represented by City Staff, City Council, Colorado Springs Utilities, El Paso County, UCCS, PPCC, Fort Carson, and PPACG.

Background:
The City of Colorado Springs has been actively involved in sustainability initiatives dating back to 2001, although sustainability was formalized in the City's 2009 strategic plan and subsequent presentation of the City's "Guiding Principles for a More Sustainable City Organization," which was presented to Council on an informal agenda item on March 23, 2009. There was also a significant regional sustainability plan called "Looking to Our Future: Pikes Peak Region 2030," which was published by the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments in 2010. The past City and regional initiatives have laid the groundwork for the newly developed Colorado Springs Sustainability Committee to pick up where the efforts left off and move us forward as a sustainable City.
This item supports the City's strategic goal relating to excelling in City services by improving the economic, environmental and social health of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region.
Financial Implications:
The Office of Sustainability is not requesting additional funding from the General Fund.
Board/Commission Recommendation:

Stakeholder Process:
The City developed a cross-departmental team and initiated the formation of a regional sustainability committee in which each large City department is represented along with key external stakeholders. Public input will be solicited as we move forward with the program.
