Emergency Preparedness Shelter Kit for People with Disabilities

  Summary:

The Independence Center desires to gift to the City of Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management an Emergency Preparedness Shelter Kit to assist people with disabilities in an emergency sheltering situation.  Greg Monck, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the Independence Center, will give a short presentation on the kit’s contents.  Bart Howard, Deputy Director of the Office of Emergency Management, will accept the kit on behalf of the City.

  Background:

The Independence Center received a $45,000 grant from the Daniels Fund, which helped create eighteen (18) Emergency Preparedness Shelter Kits and purchase ten (10) portable hearing loops.  In addition to the kit that is being provided to the City, the Independence Center is giving two (2) kits to the Colorado Springs Red Cross and one (1) kit to the El Paso County Office of Emergency Management.  The Independence Center will retain one (1) kit.  The remaining thirteen (13) kits have been provided to the Red Cross in Denver for placement around the state in case of an emergency.  The kits contain: 1) mobility devices; 2) communication devices; 3) personal heating and cooling devices; 4) eating and drinking products; 5) facility barrier items; 6) miscellaneous items; and 7) shower and bathroom items.

 

  Financial Implications:

The retail value of the kit is approximately $2,500.

The Independence Center initiated the development of the Emergency Shelter Preparedness Kit.  The Independence Center contracted with a consultant to develop the kit by identifying possible emergency shelter needs for people with disabilities.
