Wildfire Mitigation and Tax District
Presenter:
Ted Collas, Fire Chief, Colorado Springs Fire Department
Body
Summary:
An informational overview will be given regarding wildfire mitigation and pending legislation regarding special tax districts
Background:
Potential Tax District For the past two years the CSFD has engaged in sporadic conversations with City Council President Richard Skorman regarding possible funding sources to increase wildfire preparedness in West and Southwest Colorado Springs. These conversations have increased this summer and fall as much of the City has remained in a drought situation leading to prolonged burn restrictions and bans. The primary funding source possibility that has been discussed has been the establishment of a Special District which would generate capital for, but not limited to the following projects: • Increased public-private partnerships for residential mitigation • Increased mitigation in open-space areas • Re-mitigation of previously treated areas funded by grant money • Fire patrols and enforcement in wilderness areas adjacent to Gold Camp Road, Old Stage Road, Etc. The City has made no commitment to pursue a Tax District, as we are currently in a brainstorming phase; gathering ideas which would make homes in our City’s Wildland Urban Interface more resilient to the threat of wildfire.
