Body

  Summary:

An informational presentation concerning the Jimmy Camp Creek Regional Park site.

  Background:

The City Council of Colorado Springs has requested a presentation concerning the steps the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is undertaking to prepare for a master planning process for the Jimmy Camp Creek Regional Park site. Jimmy Camp Creek Park is an approximately 693 acre regional park site acquired by the City of Colorado Springs by gift through the 1988 Banning Lewis Ranch Annexation Agreement. It features gently sloped prairie grasslands, ponderosa pine forested elevations, a relatively deep valley featuring sandstone rock outcrops and a grassy valley floor, natural springs, sandstone pools and its signature Jimmy Camp Creek. Because it was easily identifiable from far across the surrounding prairie grasslands, and it offered water and shelter, prehistoric and historic people sought out this property. It became an important gathering and trading area. Consequently, it features strong archeological and historical significance for the Pikes Peak region.

  Previous Council Action:

In 1988, City Council approved PK zoning for the property with specific and restrictive zoning requirements designed to conserve the special resources at this location.
