Title
SpringsTV and Colorado Springs Fire Department presentation to Council regarding PEG Channel Overview and Comcast Cable Franchise needs
Body
From:
Kim Melchor, Lead Communications Specialist, City Communications Steve Schopper, Audio/Video Specialist, CSFD
Summary:
SpringsTV is the governmental television station for the City of Colorado Springs. SpringsTV not only records and rebroadcasts City Council programming, but produces local programming, public information and promotional pieces to engage citizens on issues relevant to our city. SpringsTV currently broadcasts on Comcast channel 18 in Standard Definition. SpringsTV is working to provide closed captioning for programming, but is unable to provide this captioning without upgrading to High Definition broadcast capability.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department also broadcasts two separate restricted access television stations that provide valuable training to CSFD personnel and to fire and medical personnel for several organizations in the Pikes Peak Region. This remote broadcast training enables emergency responders across the city to receive required training while saving training time and associated costs. CSFD would benefit from an upgrade to HD broadcast capability that would provide the level of detail needed to adequately present its training visual aids to match the quality of training presented.
The channels air on the systems of the City’s three cable television franchisees: Comcast, CenturyLink, and Falcon Broadband. Funding for SpringsTV is provided under the terms of the City’s franchise agreements with its franchisees.
