Body
Summary:
Each May is designated Preservation Month by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and as Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month by the State of Colorado. The City of Colorado Springs features many historic treasures that will be celebrated during the month of May and throughout
Background:
The City’s Planning and Community Development Department and Historic Preservation Board are proud to present Historic Preservation Month to City Council and thank the City Council for their support of Historic Preservation. Historic Preservation Month is an opportunity to create awareness of the rich history of the city and to recognize the ongoing community efforts to preserve its history. Throughout May, the agents of historic preservation and neighborhood organizations, such as the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, Historic Preservation Alliance, Friends of Monument Valley Park, Historic Neighborhoods Partnership, will work together to highlight the cultural and historic resources within the city limits.
This year, the City and community partners are looking forward to initiating and completing the City’s first Historic Resources Survey Plan, an action task from HistoricCOS. The Historic Resource Survey Plan will prioritize properties, neighborhoods, and places worthy of future research, documentation, and preservation, and define future projects and costs for protecting our historic resources. We will also be celebrating improvements being made to some of the City’s historic parks, like Monument Valley Park. Improvements that were made possible by the voter-approved ballot issue 2B to fund park improvements city-wide. These are just two (2) examples of many, that highlight the importance of historic preservation and the reasons that each May is designated as Historic Preservation Month.
