Title
A resolution authorizing free parking on Saturday November 8, 2014 for the Veteran's Day Parade.
Body
From:
Greg Warnke, Parking Administrator, Parking System
Summary:
On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the City of Colorado Springs will be hosting a parade in honor of our military veterans. There will be a large number of citizens who will be attending this parade to show their support for our veterans as well as the men and women currently serving in our Armed Forces. In an effort to meet the parking needs of all those who would like to come downtown to show their support, the event sponsor has requested that both on-street metered parking and off-street parking in the City-owned garages be free to the public during the parade.
Previous Council Action:
This resolution was originally proposed by a Council Member in 2006, at which time City Council approved the resolution. The event sponsor has made this same request annually since then and City Council has approved a resolution each year.
Background:
The Veterans Day Parade has been an annual event in Colorado Springs for many years. Colorado Springs is honored by the military presence that is part of our community. With the current conditions around the globe, more and more people want to show their support for our current and past service men and women. In 2006, Council Member Herpin suggested that the City Parking System offer free parking during the parade as a small gesture to show our support as an organization.
City Council approved this and similar requests in the past such as the Welcome Home Parade for our troops in June 2004. This year's Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Financial Implications:
To offer free parking for this event will cost the Parking System approximately $4,500 in uncollected meter and garage revenue. These figures are based on average revenues collected from on-street meters and average collections from previous events such as the Parade of Lights.
