Body

  Summary:

Each May is designated Historic Preservation Month by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and as Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month by the State of Colorado. The City of Colorado Springs features many historic treasures that will be celebrated during the month.

  Previous Council Action:

The City Council previously proclaimed May 2016 to be Historic Preservation Month.

  Background:

Preservation Month is an opportunity to create awareness of the rich history of the City and to recognize the ongoing community efforts to preserve its history.  Throughout May, the Historic Preservation Board, individuals with the City’s Old North End Neighborhood, and Historic Preservation Alliance will work together to highlight the cultural and historic resources within the City limits.

The Historic Preservation Alliance, the Old North End Neighborhood, and Bike Colorado Springs have coordinated to organize three events to celebrate historic Colorado Springs:

“How One Neighborhood Street Evolved” Tour
Date: Saturday, May 13, 2017
Where: Meet at First Lutheran Church, 1515 N. Cascade Ave.
Time: 9:30 a.m. to Noon

“An Expanded National Register Historic District” Tour
Date: Saturday, May 27, 2017
Where: Meet at First Lutheran Church, 1515 N. Cascade Ave.
Time: 9:30 a.m. to Noon

“These Places Matter: Pedal Through History Along the Legacy Loop” Bike Tour
Date: Monday, May 29, 2017
Where: Meet at Chadbourn Spanish Gospel Mission in America the Beautiful Park
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Historic Preservation Board encourages citizens to attend the workshops and tours, support other preservation activities through the month of May, and thanks the City Council for their support of Historic Preservation.
